Webster County, West Virginia, carved out of some of the most rugged terrain in the Eastern United States, was in desperate need of assistance to help fund the Sheriff's Department's K-9 program. With growth in the area, there was also a dramatic increase in drug trafficking and drug related crime. The Webster County Sheriff's Department wanted to do everything in its power to stop this vicious cycle. They were looking forward to being able to better assist the county in keeping it drug free. Webster County is a great place to live and raise a family, and they want to keep it that way. They needed help to fund their K-9 program. To better assist in finding narcotics, a K-9 needed to be added to the force. Additional equipment needed to be purchased, training costs for both K-9 and the handler were required, as well as money to purchase food, veterinary expenses, kennel supplies, and other necessary training equipment. The existing K-9 program had been running on a small budget, with the K-9 officer often providing food and supplies. The K-9 is a tool that the department felt necessary for Webster County to have to help keep their families, and children safe from drugs. The National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP) joined with the Webster County Sheriff's Department in a campaign to raise funds to continue strengthening its police K-9 program. Because of the support and participation of the community, the K-9 matching gift program was an enormous success. |
