St. Marys is located in Pleasants County, West Virginia. The city has a population of just over 2,000 people. The narcotic detector program has shown a 90% increase in drug arrests in the city and larceny counts increased 250% between 2001 and 2002. It is the hope of the St. Marys Police Department that the addition of a police K-9 will help reduce the drug related crime in the community.
Until the National Association of Chiefs of Police joined with St. Marys Police Department to help fund the K-9 program, the program had been running on a very small budget with the K-9 officer often providing food and supplies. As a result of the matching gift project $6,952 was provided to the department on June 16, 2004 to help with their K-9 program.
