The
mother of a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy, who passed away in March
of this year, made it her dying wish to help her community through the
purchase of new drug-sniffing patrol dog. On Tuesday, June 21, 2004 at
10 a.m. at the American Police Hall of Fame located in Titusville, her
wish became reality as a check for $10,400 was presented to the
Sheriff's Office to pay for the purchase of its newest K-9 deputy, Sam.
"Sam"
was purchased with money raised by the estate of the late Mrs. Joan
Popp and a matching contribution from the National Association of
Chiefs of Police. She passed away after an illness and asked that in
lieu of flowers, people donate money to a fund for the purchase of a
sheriff's K-9. "Joan always loved animals, and wanted to make a
difference in her community," said her husband, Greg Popp. "Flowers are
fleeting, but the purchase of this animal will not only benefit the
community, but save lives as well." Popp's estate raised about $5,400.
The National Association of Chiefs of Police also has a national
program where it will match the donations made by the community to
benefit the police K-9 program. Brevard County Undersheriff Bob Sarver
received the donation. "Sam" was also on hand along with the Popp
family and close friends.
