Hondo, Texas has a population of over 8,000 people and is located approximately 30 miles west of San Antonio. The police department has 15 officers, which includes the chief, a lieutenant and three sergeants. An increase in population together with the demand for illegal drugs being transported from Mexico into the United States has created enormous pressure on local law enforcement agencies. Before their K9 Matching Gift Program, Hondo Police Department was serving the entire community, the county, and five other local agencies with their one K9 unit. The officer was on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The $5,082 raised through this program was used to purchase an additional K9.
