January 15, 2001 - Although the Homestead, Florida Police Department is larger than most departments needing funding for K-9s, the economic stress the city has felt since Hurricane Andrew in 1992 has caused great financial strain. Because the city is part of the Greater Miami Metropolitan area, crime here is on par with that of the rest of Miami. These factors compelled the National Association of Chiefs of Police to consider the City of Homestead for a police K-9 grant. In January 2001 a check for $5,000 was presented to Chief Al Rolle to fund the canine purchase as part of a new county-wide crime prevention campaign.
