About NACOP

Titusville, Florida – Chief Chris Nicholson was presented a check for $5,000 by the 11,000 member National Association of Chiefs of Police for the of the Calhoun, Tennessee Police Department’s K-9 program. The check was presented on November 3, 2003 at the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum in Titusville, Florida. The Calhoun Police Department was selected to receive the $5,000 grant as part of the K-9 Placement Program sponsored by the National Association of Chiefs of Police. This 2-˝ year old program was developed to help under-funded police departments with their K-9 programs. Applications are accepted from any U.S. law enforcement agency and selection is based on the department’s need. Grants have been given to law enforcement agencies in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, Tennessee and Michigan. Calhoun, Tennessee is located between Knoxville and Chattanooga. Interstate 75 and Highway 11 pass near Calhoun and facilitate a stream of drug traffic. With a town population of 600, the department did not have the funds to purchase a K-9. Chief Nicholson was grateful to be able to replace a K-9 that was recently retired. The new K-9, “Argo”, proved himself his first day on duty by helping catch a car thief. He has also been instrumental in the success of over a dozen drug finds. Chief Nicholson is convinced that K-9 Argro, with his sweet temperament and fondness for people, coupled with his drug detecting skills will be a huge asset to the department and the community.
