A “win-win” partnership has been forged between the Albion, Michigan Department of Public Safety and the 11,000 member National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP), a law-enforcement related public safety charity based in Florida.
“When we were contacted by Lt. Gerald MacQueen of the Albion Department of Public Safety indicating the need to fund a canine to provide an extra measure of safety and security for local citizens, we were in a position to assist”, said Jamie Shepherd, K-9 Program Chairman of the National Association of Chiefs of Police. Shepherd alerted NACOP’s Board of Directors who approved a matching fund campaign to run from April 1 through April 30, 2003.
Any individual or business who donates funds to help provide a much-needed K-9 to the Albion police, will have their funds matched dollar-for-dollar by NACOP, a tax-exempt organization that has been in existence since 1967.
“With the loss of the department’s only two K-9’s we are forced to rely on help from neighboring agencies”, stated Lt. MacQueen. “This situation puts the citizens of Albion at risk. The delay in the availability of a police K-9 could mean the loss of precious time in locating a lost child or elderly person. We cannot thank NACOP enough for getting on board and approving this matching donation program”.
